What a weekend of football we have in store. Our rundown of the best games to watch this weekend features crunch clashes in the Champions League chase and title-deciding games in Spain and Portugal.
Here are our five must-watch games.
There might be little on the line, but a meeting of the Premier League’s top two is always one to watch. Mikel Arteta has been mocked this week for jokingly suggesting title winners Liverpool were in the ‘right moment in the right place’ this season, having lifted the league with less points than Arsenal managed in the last two campaigns.
Anfield is sure to make its feelings felt on that, as Liverpool’s title celebrations continue against an Arsenal outfit whose fifth straight season without silverware was confirmed in midweek.
The race for Champions League qualification in Serie A is a beauty.
Italy just edge Spain in the current co-efficient ratings, which could give the division five places in next season’s Champions League. That would be welcomed by Juventus, Roma and Lazio, who sit fourth, fifth and sixth in the table – level on points.
Bologna are just a point behind that trio, while third-placed Atalanta are not quite assured of a top-five finish just yet. Two of the contenders meet this weekend in a huge clash.
From one Champions League chase to another.
Newcastle United welcome Chelsea to St James’ Park this weekend with both teams currently inside the qualification places. Mathematically at least, Manchester City, Newcastle, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa could all end the weekend either inside or outside of the Premier League’s top five.
Newcastle and Chelsea are level on points heading into Sunday’s showdown, where a slip for either could be catastrophic.
The best title race in Europe is happening in Portugal and there could be a definitive result this weekend.
Arch-rivals Benfica and Sporting are level on points heading into their clash in Lisbon, in what is the penultimate game of the campaign. Sporting lead by virtue of goal difference, but must earn a positive result at The Estádio da Luz.
Grab the popcorn for this one.
El Clásico is back for another edition with plenty on the line.
Real Madrid must win to stand a realistic chance of defending their La Liga crown, with a four-point gap to Barcelona with four games to go.
The Catalans have had the better of their Clásico contests this season, winning all three previous meetings, including the Copa del Rey final. However, after a physically and emotionally draining Champions League exit to Inter Milan in midweek, Real might have the advantage.
