Paul Robinson believes Celtic would be an attractive move for Burnley's Josh Brownhill as his contract runs down at Turf Moor.
Former England international Paul Robinson believes that Burnley’s Josh Brownhill should consider a move to Celtic as he approaches the final months of his contract at Turf Moor.
The midfielder has played a key role for the Clarets this season, scoring nine goals as Scott Parker’s side sit second in the table as they chase automatic promotion.
However, there are major doubts over Brownhill’s long-term future, due to his contract expiring, and it has been claimed that the likes of Fiorentina, Lazio, Celtic and Rangers are all keeping tabs on the 29-year-old.
So, Brownhill could have a big decision to make on his future in the summer, and, speaking to Football Insider, pundit Robinson explained why a move to Celtic Park could appeal to the player, as he backed the ex-Preston man to flourish in Glasgow.
“No disrespect to the Championship, I think he can go on and do bigger and better than the Championship. [His] contract [is] coming to an end now and is able to talk to clubs now sign a pre-contract if he wants.
“He’s in a really good position for a player of his age and he’s in a good position because he’s playing every week and is playing well every week. Celtic could be a great option for him, [the] offer of Champions League football again next year.
“Obviously, Champions League football for Josh Brownhill next year, it could be a little bit of a pull in the right direction, especially if Brendan Rodgers is still in charge.”
Most would agree with Robinson’s assessment here that Brownhill should be playing at a higher level than the Championship, because he has been outstanding this season.
At 29, he is at his peak, and it’s no surprise that there’s plenty of interest in the midfielder, as clubs will recognise that there is a bargain to be had in the summer.
It seems likely that Brownhill will wait until the season has finished before making a decision, and that makes sense, as the prospect of Premier League football with Burnley is going to appeal, if they can seal a return to the top-flight.
Equally so, he may want to test himself in Italy given the rumours, and, as Robinson says, Celtic are likely to be able to offer Champions League football, which is the pinnacle in the club game.
