Prolific at a lower level, Macaulay Langstaff has struggled in the Championship

Millwall have been called to part ways with striker Macaulay Langstaff this summer, with the prolific striker “clearly not up to the level of the Championship.”
After scoring 69 league goals in 93 appearances for Notts County, Langstaff was snapped up by Millwall last summer for an initial £700,000.
However, in 28 Championship appearances, the striker has notched just one goal, leading to many Millwall fans questioning the transfer.
Prior to earning promotion to League Two with Notts County in 2023, Langstaff had played the entirety of his football in non-league.
However, his first season in the EFL was a fine one, with the striker grabbing 28 goals in 46 League Two appearances.
After an impressive debut in the EFL, Millwall came calling, signing the 28-year-old to a long-term contract ahead of the 2024/25 season.
But fast forward 28 games later, and Football League World’s Millwall fan pundit, Lucas Ball, believes that the Lions should move on from the forward, who has not shown enough at the Den.
FLW's resident Millwall expert predicts the Lions to try and tie down Middlesbrough loanee Josh Coburn to a permanent deal, as well as try and bring in another striker - limiting Langstaff's gametime further.
Lucas told FLW: “Absolutely I could see Macaulay Langstaff leaving the club this summer.
“I think it’s the best thing for all parties at this point; he’s clearly not up to the level of the Championship.
“I don’t think he’s shown that many glimpses to show that he is a player that is going to be able to get (to the level of the Championship).
“Whilst Alex Neil has improved a number of players, and looks like he will continue to improve a number of players, Langstaff has also spent some time out injured recently, so that hasn’t helped his spot in the pecking order.
"Mihalio Ivanovic is clearly the main man up-top at the moment, and I think it’s position where they will want at least one more in the summer, if not two.
“They’ll want two, realistically, but it will depend on someone who is already at the club in Josh Coburn, if we can get a deal done at a decent price, then I’d think they’d like to do that.
“But, if not, it will be two other strikers, I imagine, unless Zak Lovelace or AJ Matthews are viewed as being ready to be that third choice at this stage of their careers.”
Lucas is tipping Langstaff for a departure this summer, believing the 28-year-old's lower league pedigree to be tempting for clubs in League One and League Two.
He continued: “In terms of Langstaff, it has not worked out. It’s unfortunate, we all hoped it would, obviously, it was an exciting signing at the time.
“Unfortunately for him, unfortunately for us, it’s a gamble that hasn’t quite paid off, and it looks like the best thing for all parties would be for him to move back down to League One or Two.
“I’m sure they’ll be a lot of interest – he's still someone who scores an awful lot of goals at those lower levels.
“It’s just that Championship has been too big a jump.”
