Amorim insists Europa League win won’t save Man United season

Ruben Amorim has insisted winning the Europa League won’t change a ‘very disappointing’ season for Manchester United.
Amorim’s side face Athletic Bilbao in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final tonight, with a healthy 3-0 lead from the first meeting in Spain.
Victory in the competition would secure silverware and Champions League qualification, but Amorim has insisted that would not right the wrongs of their campaign.
The Red Devils are 15th in the Premier League table and guaranteed their lowest-ever points total in the Premier League era. United have also not finished as low as 15th in the top division since being relegated in 1973/74.
“I still feel that this season was the worst in 40 years,” Amorim said at his pre-match press conference.
“We could be the worst United team in Premier League history with the Europa League title, but it won’t change anything. This season has been very disappointing. Nothing will change that.”
United boast a sizeable lead heading into tonight’s return with the Spanish side, though Amorim has warned his side still have a job to do. Either Bodo/Glimt or Tottenham Hotspur await in the final.
On whether his side must avoid being complacent, he added: “That is clear because also if you look at our season, anything is possible. We have to understand that one goal can change everything, the momentum of the game, one sent off, you saw it one week ago. So, we are prepared to fight to win the game, not thinking about the result [of the tie]. Of course, that matters, in the way we are going to do things, especially in the start of the game, but we are thinking about winning the game.”
