Antwerp had a transitional summer. They saw key players leave and brought in a new head coach in Jonas De Roeck. At times, they have looked great, while towards the end of 2024 they did not. The side have been inconsistent this year, playing well against the so called lesser teams while struggling against the bigger sides. Qualifying for European football after missing out last season would be a success.
Summer signing Tjaronn Chery has been a huge success, with eight goals and five assists so far. He has linked up well with the rest of the attacking trident in Vincent Janssen and Jacob Ondrejka. Janssen has six assists to go with his seven goals, while Ondrejka has four assists alongside his seven goals. In recent weeks the side have also seen improved performances winger Gyrano Kerk. At the back, goalkeeper Senne Lammens has been one of the best in the league this season. The 22-year-old has seen the side more than happy to move on from Jean Butez.
Transfer needs
The side could do with another striker. When Janssen isn’t available they really do look light in that position. Kerk can play there if required, but he is much more effective out wide. If Michel Ange Balikwisha is also to remain injured they could do with another wide player to fill the gap left by him.
Another key area is at left-back. If Ayrton Costa leaves, which looks likely, they will need to find another player to play there. Jelle Bataille has been filling in in recent weeks, but he is a naturally right-footed player and better playing as a right-back. If Costa leaves, expect Antwerp to move quickly to replace him, given he was brought in to replace the on loan Owen Wijndal. When Butez does leave, likely to Lens, they could also do with another experienced goalkeeper as back-up to Lammens should he pick up an injury.
De Roeck will be glad the break came when it did, as the sides early season form was starting to be wasted. If they can regroup and perhaps strengthen slightly in January then a top four finish should be possible.
