Alisson delivered a goalkeeping masterclass as Liverpool took a slender 1-0 lead in the last 16 first-leg of the Champions League on Wednesday night at Parc des Princes.
Liverpool scored in the 87th minute through Harvey Elliott, who netted with his first touch after replacing Mohamed Salah.
Darwin Nunez replaced Diogo Jota, and he made an instant impact. The 25-year-old striker has had a difficult campaign, but he provided the crucial assist for Elliott, and Arne Slot was extremely pleased with the Uruguayan.
Speaking after the match, Slot said: “I have to give him big compliments for that and also my staff because they keep working with him and every time come up with great exercises so he (Harvey Elliott) stays fit.
“But it wasn’t only Harvey, it was also the one who assisted, Darwin Nunez, who came from a difficult two games but was absolutely there again tonight because from the moment he came in we were more of a threat than before.”
The home side registered 27 shots, and it is quite astonishing that they didn’t manage to score – and it is down to Alisson (mainly) and the Reds’ defence.
At the same time, Liverpool found a way to grab a win when they were nowhere near their best, and that is a trait they have displayed time and again this season under Slot.
Nunez has only started in seven Premier League games for Liverpool this season, and a further 15 have come from the bench. He has managed only six goals in all competitions for the Reds, and his future at the club has come under intense speculation.
With Jota and Luis Diaz misfiring at the moment, Slot could be tempted to give Nunez more game time to prove a point.
Liverpool will face Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday at Anfield, and both Nunez and Elliott could start against the league’s rock-bottom side.
