Arsenal have missed out on a cash windfall of £1million after Southampton were relegated from the Premier League.

The Gunners sold goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to Southampton last summer and the deal included a survival bonus for Arsenal if Saints beat the drop this season.

Southampton would have paid Arsenal £1m if they had avoided relegation, but their fate was confirmed on Sunday after losing at Tottenham.

Arsenal banked an upfront fee of £18m by selling Ramsdale, who has become Southampton’s No1 and regained his place in the England squad.

The Gunners replaced Ramsdale by signing Neto on loan from Bournemouth on transfer deadline day last summer.

The club are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper this summer to provided competition and cover for current No1 David Raya.

Arsenal are expected to go back in for Joan Garcia this summer

Arsenal hold a long-term interest in Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia and are expected to return for him this summer after failing to sign him a year ago.

The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move this summer and reports in Germany claim that Bayer Leverkusen are also firm admirers.

Espanyol sporting director, Fran Garagarza, confirmed earlier this year that the club would be open to selling Garcia, with a reported release clause of around €25m (£21m).

“In the final stretch of the transfer window, we have to ask for the release clause, but if a good offer comes in before then, we’ll study it,” Garagarza told Radio Marca.

"But the important thing is to know what we would do with that money. We have to work on the line of succession.”
