Gian Piero Gasperini caused a ruckus at Atalanta in recent days, announcing he wouldn’t renew his contract that expires in 2026 and that he will decide at the end of the campaign whether he will stay for another year or leave early.
CEO Luca Percassi addressed the coach’s remarks to DAZN before La Dea romped Empoli (via Fantacalcio).
“The Champions League elimination was a pretext for my father to reunite everybody and take stock. We’re proud with what we have done in such a competition. We hope to be a protagonist for the remainder of the season.” “Gasperini has spent nine years on the Atalanta bench. We have always addressed this matter after the conclusion of the campaign. There won’t be an accelerated timetable compared to the past. We will respect his will. He’s tied to us until 2026. We’ll see in a few months.”
Percassi is pleased with how the team is faring despite the recent disappointment.
“We’re doing something extraordinary. We don’t want to make predictions or promises. Everything we’ve conquered has come step by step. We’ll keep doing so.”
The Bergamaschi are three points behind Inter and two below Napoli as the two league toppers will collide in the next round.
He’s been restless in the past, but he seemed sterner in this case. The abrupt exit and the Ademola Lookman case might have contributed to him taking a stance. It could soften up in a couple of months. In a normal situation, the parties would be headed for a divorce, as top teams don’t keep lame-duck coaches, but the rapport is way stronger in this case, so he could be in for his last dance.
