Atlético Madrid star sets La Liga record after netting hat-trick off the bench vs Girona | OneFootball

A leading member of the attacking ranks at La Liga giants Atlético Madrid has on Sunday secured for himself a piece of Spanish football history.

This comes owing to developments in the Rojiblancos’ final day meeting with Girona.

Diego Simeone’s troops marked their return to action a short time ago, making the trip to the Estadi Montilivi as part of the season’s final round of fixtures in Spain’s top-flight.

When all was said and done, Atlético emerged dominant victors, by four goals to nil.

And it was Alexander Sørloth who proved himself the star of the show.

Frontman Sørloth was forced to make do with a spot on the bench from the off in Catalunya, with boss Simeone having opted for a front two of Antoine Griezmann and Julián Alvarez.

Introduced to the fray during the 2nd-half, though, the Norwegian went on to make his presence very much felt…

Completely changing the course of the game, Sørloth netted a fine hat-trick, between the 68th and 93rd minute at the Montilivi.

And as alluded to above, in the process, Atlético’s summer signing made history.

As revealed by statisticians Opta in the game’s aftermath:

‘Alexander Sørloth is the first player to score 10 goals coming off the bench in a single season in La Liga in the entire 21st century.’
