FC Augsburg’s incredible run of form will not be halted. A 1-0 home win over VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday afternoon now leaves the Fuggerstädter undefeated in six straight Bundesliga fixtures. In 9th-place on 38 points through 26 match days, the Bavarian Swabians even find themselves within striking distance of European football for just the second time in club history.
The latest victory brought with it plenty of talking points, not least the fact that FCA keeper Finn Dahmen’s pursuit of an all-time Bundesliga record continues after the 26th-year-old kept his sixth consecutive clean sheet. The fact that FCA striker Phillip Tietz broke a three-month goal-scoring drought also intrigued, particularly after the 27-year-old’s post match interview.
Tietz – who had been in competition with teammate Samuel Essende for a starting spot this week – had multiple reasons to offer for his scoring. For starters, there was his heavily pregnant wife. Tietz’s decision to employ the standard “pregnancy ball” goal-celebration had real meaning in this case. Beyond that, there was also hair dye and a promise made to a young fan earlier this week.
“It’s been such a long dry spell; a time of suffering for any striker,” Tietz told Sky Germany. “Now I’ve finally got it behind me. I’m extremely happy. I have to thank my wife, who supports me every day. She’s been waiting a long time for me to score, and she’s been pregnant for a long time. “I think a lot of fans wanted me to dye my hair blonde again because things went really well for me when it was blonde,” Tietz continued. “The superstition about blonde hair persists.”
On the topic of sporting superstitions, the “promise to a young boy” anecdote also cropped up. One young Augsburg fan met Tietz in the barbershop on Friday whilst he was dying his hair and (after arranging matters), got to take Tietz’s boots home with him after the full-time whistle.
“He was a big fan of mine and I promised him,” a sock-clad Tietz noted, “He’s a very nice, sweet boy.”
