Dutch football legend Ruud Gullit has heaped praise on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, acknowledging his resurgence under Hansi Flick.
After facing criticism earlier in the season, De Jong has responded in style, delivering a series of impressive performances that have silenced his doubters.
The Barcelona midfielder has been in exceptional form in recent weeks, reclaiming his role as a key figure in the team’s midfield.
Even those who previously questioned his impact have been forced to admit that De Jong’s best version is of the highest calibre.
This shift in perception comes after a period of scrutiny, during which the Dutchman struggled to find his rhythm due to lingering ankle issues.
Gullit himself was among those who openly criticised De Jong, questioning whether he had lost his importance in Barcelona’s system.
However, the narrative has now changed. De Jong has made up for lost time under Flick, gradually regaining his top form and once again establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in world football.

The Netherlands legend has admitted that he previously saw De Jong as a secondary figure in midfield but now recognises his decisive influence on the pitch.
“I have criticized him a lot. A few months ago we all thought that he had become a secondary player in midfield. Now he is a starter again, he has recovered his best level and he is once again decisive in his team,” he said.
While Gullit stands by his past criticism, he now believes the Barcelona star is deserving of widespread recognition for his improvement.
He also noted that De Jong’s resurgence will be crucial for the national team’s ambitions in the UEFA Nations League.
“We have to recognize that Frenkie’s improvement has a lot of merit. I’m very happy for him and I think it will be very positive for the national team.
“He’s great, but if he doesn’t play well I’ll criticise him again. At the moment, he does play well and it is only fair that he receives all the praise in the world,” he added.
As the Netherlands prepare for a tough quarter-final clash against Spain, all eyes will be on De Jong to lead the midfield battle.
With his confidence restored and performances back at the highest level, he is set to play a vital role in his nation’s pursuit of success.
