Barcelona’s most recent win over Deportivo Alaves served as a reminder of Lamine Yamal’s talent, as the forward effortlessly dribbled past the opposing defenders at will.

Although Yamal was not involved in the winning goal, Yamal has enjoyed quite a productive season so far.

The case for Yamal being the MVP this season

Lamine’s performances have been consistently exceptional, earning him the Player of the Match award in five La Liga encounters against Athletic, Girona, Getafe, Betis, and Alaves.

As mentioned earlier, the performance against Alaves was particularly noticeable, as the forward attempted 21 dribbles and completed 11 of them, thereby securing a milestone last reached by none other than Lionel Messi.

His impact isn’t confined to domestic play. In the Champions League, Lamine has also shone brightly, securing Player of the Match in matches against Borussia Dortmund and Atalanta.

His technical prowess, combined with his vision and execution, has been pivotal in key games, including both Clasicos as well as both the matches against Bayern and Dortmund.

Statistics also back his claim for MVP; Lamine leads La Liga in successful dribbles, with 72 out of 140 attempts. At just 17, Yamal has racked up 10 goals and 16 assists, in just 29 competitive matches.

His accolades extend beyond the pitch, having been named in FIFA’s Best Awards world eleven, clinching the Kopa Trophy for the best young player at the Ballon d’Or gala, and securing the Golden Boy award.

Yamal, therefore, does indeed make a strong case for becoming La Liga’s Most Valuable Player this season.

However, the Barcelona forward is set to face stiff competition from his own teammates including Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski. Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe, too, makes a strong case following a strong start to 2025.
