A member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona was on Wednesday forced to pull out of international duty with the Catalan national team.
That’s according to Diario Sport, who point towards Gerard Martín as the player in question.
Left-back Martín was for his part rewarded for what proved to be a breakout campaign on the books of Barcelona with a call-up to the latest Catalan squad earlier this month.
The issue, however, is that the ex-Cornellà talent was also drafted into the Spanish U21 squad by boss Santi Denia.
Martín had since trained with the former ahead of an upcoming friendly meeting with Costa Rica on Wednesday evening.
As alluded to above, though, at the last minute, owing to his impending commitments with La Rojita, the stopper has withdrawn from the Catalans’ ranks.
As per a report from Sport:
‘Gerard Martín is a last-minute withdrawal for the match of the Catalan Football Team that will face Costa Rica at the Johan Cruyff Stadium. The reason given by the FCF is the incompatibility of the Barça player with his call-up with the Spanish U21 team.’
Set to represent Barcelona in this evening’s action against Costa Rice are the pairing of Eric García, and Pau Víctor.
