FC Barcelona are now set to head to the Metropolitano in Madrid to face off against yet another strong side. This time around, their opponents will be none other than Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. For Barcelona, this is a massive game in terms of their La Liga title hopes.
Anything except for a win would be disappointing for the Catalan giants, and they must aim for it at all costs. However, unlike most of the opponents that they have faced this season, Atletico Madrid is one side that Barcelona are yet to taste victory against across their previous meetings.
The first time that these two sides met this season was at the Montjuic Stadium in a La Liga encounter. Despite having their home support behind them and playing some great football, Barcelona ended up losing 1-2 to the visiting side.
In their second meeting, which was their most recent one, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid played at the Montjuic Stadium once again for the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final tie. Even in that game, Barça could not manage to get the victory as the match ended in a 4-4 draw.
Now, for their third meeting of the season, Atletico Madrid will have the home advantage behind them. Diego Simeone’s side may have just recently lost to Real Madrid on penalties in the UEFA Champions League, but his side will be out for revenge in order to gain confidence again.
In terms of form as well, Atletico Madrid have proven to be a tough side to beat. However, across their last five games across all competitions, they have showcased that they are not exactly invincible and have vulnerabilities as well.
With only two wins in their last five games, Atletico Madrid have also drawn to Barcelona, lost to Real Madrid, and have lost to Getafe in La Liga as well. However, they are still a resilient side and one that is knocking on the door when it comes to the top spot in the La Liga table.
Across those five games, Diego Simeone’s side has managed to score 8 goals and have conceded 8 goals as well. Their defensive ability is already a well-known attribute of theirs, but even offensively Atletico Madrid do not go down without putting up a right.
As for Barcelona, the Catalan giants still remain unbeaten in 2025 despite already two and a half months into the new year. Already a massive achievement in its own right, La Blaugrana are now focused on ensuring that they can win this game and retain their lead at the top properly.
Over the course of the last five games, Barcelona have been spectacular. With two wins against SL Benfica in the UEFA Champions League, and two more victories over Real Sociedad and UD Las Palmas in La Liga, Hansi Flick’s team is flying. Their only less-than-ideal result came against Atletico Madrid during their Copa del Rey clash, which ended in a 4-4 draw.
Across those last five games, however, Barça have continued to showcase their offensive firepower. Having scored 14 goals in their last five games, while having conceded only 5 goals in return, Hansi Flick’s side is fully prepared and ready to go for this big clash at the Metropolitano.
