Fermin Lopez was the star performer for Barcelona as they squashed aside Valencia 7-1 on Sunday.
Lopez was involved in two goals and two assists, with his all-round performance even gaining praise from Barcelona coach Hansi Flick.
Thanks to Fermin’s performance, the Spaniard has reached a milestone that was previously reached by none other than Lionel Messi.
In a game where Barcelona sent clear signals that they are not down and out just yet, Fermin was not only a catalyst but also made history.
His contribution of two goals and two assists in a single La Liga match is indeed a rare feat, last accomplished by Lionel Messi on October 29, 2019, during a 5-1 victory against Valladolid.

This milestone comes after 1,916 days since Messi’s last such achievement, highlighting the rarity and significance of Lopez’s performance.
Additionally, he became the first player in this season’s La Liga to record a 2+2 after 21 games, outshining several high-profile names like Vinicius Jr., Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Antoine Griezmann.
Fermin also joins an elite list of Barcelona players who have managed to rack up two goals and two assists in a single game – a list that includes the likes of Messi, Luis Suarez and Griezmann.
Fermin will hope this is not the last time he reaches this milestone either. The performance against Valencia, after all, will go a long way in helping his case for a start in the coming matches.
