Celtic appear to be looking for a defensive midfielder this summer. They have been linked with three such players in recent weeks. One of them is Kalidou Sidibe of Guingamp, the tallest player in Ligue 2. The second is Wataru Endo of Liverpool and the Japanese national team captain. The third is Elvis Rexhbecaj of FC Augsburg, who is also a Kosovo international.

Celtic paid a club-record fee to sign Arne Engels from FC Augsburg last summer. But this time around, it looks like Rexhbecaj could be available for a bargain transfer figure.

As reported by Football Insider, Brendan Rodgers has identified Rexhbecaj as an ideal successor to Callum McGregor at Celtic. The Kosovo international could be available for a bargain this summer if the Bundesliga club decide to part ways, with the Hoops likely to succeed with a cut-price bid of roughly £3 million to £3.5 million.

It remains to be seen if Celtic do end up making a transfer bid for Rexhbecaj. But it looks like they won't need to break the bank to sign him.

Rexhbecaj is a Bundesliga veteran. He has played for clubs like FC Augsburg, Wolfsburg, Cologne and Bochum over the course of his career.

Until now, he has made 180 appearances in the Bundesliga. And at 27 years of age, he might just be entering his prime years as a footballer.

So, it is not hard to understand why Celtic might be interested in signing Rexhbecaj. He could be key to unlocking Engels' full potential as well, as the two were teammates at Augsburg.

All that being said, it is hard to imagine that McGregor would be out of the starting XI anytime soon. So, Rexhbecaj could initially have to do with a role off the bench, if he joined Celtic.
