So far this season, we have seen Bayern Munich pick up 48 points from their 19 games so far, winning 15, drawing three, and losing just once. The vast majority of the performances have been excellent, and it appears that the data also justify their dominance.
According to the always excellent DataMB, when compared to teams in the top seven leagues, Bayern rank in the 100th percentile for possession, 99th percentile for goals, attacking, and physicality, 98th percentile for defending, and 96th percentile for pressing.
Furthermore, when compared to teams in the top five leagues - Bayern Munich rank highest for goals, expected goals, PPDA (passes per defensive action that Bayern allow the opposition to have), highest aerial duel percentage, and least shots on target against.
To emphasize just how much Bayern dominate games, DataMB has also released the top five players in the top five leagues for passes per 90. The top four are all Bayern players. First is Joshua Kimmich with 104.17, Aleksandar Pavlovic with 97.64, Kim Min-jae with 97.42, and Dayot Upamecano with 95.36.
It is good to see that the numbers back up what we have seen with our eyes. Although the Bavarian club generally played better than the results suggested last season, they did not have this level of dominance in games. Even in the draws with Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund, they should have won. Eintracht Frankfurt and Mainz are probably the only two games this season that Bayern did not deserve to win.
Nothing is settled yet. Bayer Leverkusen are in great form and remain only six points behind. During the winter break, you'd have hoped that three wins from three to restart things would have been enough for a bigger buffer - but to look at it positively, they are three games closer to winning the league. For now, Vincent Kompany and players deserve all the plaudits for showing improvement on the pitch after enduring a trophyless last season.
While results and data are promising for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, there is significant scope for improvement for the team in the Champions League. The Bavarian club has suffered three defeats, all away from home- Aston Villa, FC Barcelona, and Feyenoord. If Die Roten want to go deep in the Champions League, they have to emulate the performances of the Bundesliga in Europe.
