The international break in March is generally an anxious time for clubs since there is a big risk of losing players to injuries for the rest of the season. This season’s international break has been tragic for Bayern from an injury point of view.
Alphonso Davies suffered an injury on Monday during the clash against the United States. It was initially expected to be a minor injury. However, further scans in Munich on Wednesday have revealed that Davies has suffered a serious knee ligament injury.
It is devastating news for Bayern as Davies is expected to be out for six months. The Canadian full-back will be back in action by October. Davies has already undergone surgery to repair the damage in his knee.
Davies has been a key player for Vincent Kompany and Bayern this season. After enduring a dip in form last season, he has looked back to his best this year. He has provided an edge in the final third on the left flank without compromising his defensive duties. The Canadian’s absence will deeply hurt Bayern during the Champions League games.
In the absence of Davies, Hiroki Ito and Raphael Guerreiro will have to share the left-back duties for Bayern. Josip Stanisic can also play in this position if needed.
Apart from Davies, Bayern will be without Dayot Upamecano for the next six weeks due to loose joints in his knee. The French defender may also have to undergo surgery as part of the rehabilitation process for this injury.
Upamecano will miss the quarterfinals and semi-finals of the Champions League. He should be back in the squad for the final if Bayern reach that stage of the competition.
The French center-back has been Bayern’s most consistent central defender this season. He formed a strong partnership with Kim Min-jae in the heart of defense. Courtesy of his tremendous form this season, Bayern are holding contract talks with the French defender.
Eric Dier will get significant playing time in central defense when Bundesliga resumes later this weekend. Kim Min-jae is also recovering from an Achilles problem. The South Korean should be fit for the first leg against Inter Milan in the Champions League quarterfinals. Hiroki Ito and Josip Stanisic will be center-back options to partner Dier later this week.
Meanwhile, Jonas Urbig is back in training. The young goalkeeper will start in goal for Bayern against FC St. Pauli since Manuel Neuer also suffered an injury setback in training last week. The 38-year-old goalkeeper is facing a race against time to be fit for the Champions League clash against Inter Milan.
