Bayern Munich have been dealt a huge blow after star defender Alphonso Davies suffered an ACL tear in his right knee while on International duty with Canada.

The Bundesliga club revealed Davies will now miss the rest of the season after suffering the injury blow in Canada’s 2-1 victory over the United States in the Concacaf Nations League third-place playoff on Sunday.

Bayern’s director of sport Max Eberl said in a statement: “Unfortunately, during international breaks there’s always the risk that players will return injured – this time it’s hit us particularly hard.”

In a further blow for the German giants, central defender Dayot Upamecano has also been ruled out for several weeks with a knee injury, following diagnosis which revealed ‘loose joints’.

“The absences of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano are a heavy blow for Bayern,” Eberl continued.

“Phonzy will get all the support he needs on his way back. We will also follow Upa closely in the coming weeks and assume that he will be available again soon.

“Our squad is strong and will compensate for these absences.”

The duo will miss key fixtures in the race for the Bundesliga title, where Bayern currently hold a six-point advantage over Bayer Leverkusen, and the Champions League quarter-final tie against Inter Milan.

Davies has been ever-present for Bayern this season, racking up 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring three times – including twice in the Champions League.

Upamecano has been a regular under Vincent Kompany at the heart of the Bayern defence, with the France international recording 37 appearances for club and country this term.

Following the conclusion of the International break, Bayern face league matches against FC St. Pauli and Augsburg, before the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Inter at the start of next month.

Should Bayern overcome Inter, they will face either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund in the last four.
