There’s just something about when Manchester City and Real Madrid meet in the Champions League.
The latest instalment of an engrossing rivalry delivered again with late drama at the Etihad. Jude Bellingham scored a stoppage-time winner as Real Madrid came from behind to claim a 3-2 win in Manchester.
Pep Guardiola’s side twice led on the night through Erling Haaland but Real Madrid, as they so often do on this stage, found a response.
After weathering an early storm from the Spaniards, City struck first through a familiar source. A well worked goal saw Jack Grealish and Josko Gvardiol combine before Haaland guided in his first ever goal against Real Madrid.
City led 1-0 at the interval but an equaliser arrived on the hour. Dani Ceballos looped the ball back into the box after a half-cleared set piece and found Kylian Mbappe. The French forward miscued his kick on the volley but it deceived Ederson to level the score.
The momentum swung back in City’s favour 10 minutes from time. Ceballos’ clumsy challenge on Phil Foden saw a spot-kick awarded and Haaland stepped up to slam in his 49th Champions League goal.
City looked to have done enough to take a lead to Spain but a late collapse proved costly. First, Ederson’s error saw Brahim Diaz equalise on the rebound against his former side, after the goalkeeper failed to hold Vinicius Junior’s initial effort.
Then came a calamity.
Rico Lewis hesitated in receiving a Mateo Kovacic pass and Vinicius stole in to lead a counter. The Brazilian’s chip over Ederson was going wide, but Bellingham followed up to steer in a stoppage-time sucker punch.
Real return to the Spanish capital with a lead and will start as strong favourites to progress. For City, a difficult campaign continues to get tougher.
