It is no secret that FC Barcelona has had to deal with some well-documented financial issues in recent years. These problems have forced the club into making some uncomfortable decisions as well. However, at the same time, Barcelona has also made some rather understandable investments.
One such investment could be connected to the signing of young Spanish midfielder Pablo Torre. With an initial payment of only €5 million, Barcelona managed to secure the services of a Racing Santander player who was showing off a lot of promise and potential.
Since then, it has been clear enough that Torre has rarely ever established himself as a first-team regular. While he has showcased his exceptional talent in the glimpses that have been seen of him, the Spaniard’s role at Barcelona can hardly even be labelled as rotational given his extreme lack of prominence.
However, there might just be a reason behind his lack of prominence this season, especially after an MVP display against UD Barbastro at the start of 2025. As highlighted by SPORT, the real reason behind his situation might have something to do with the variables that were agreed between Barcelona and his former club.
While the €5 million payment was the upfront investment made by the Catalan giants, there are reportedly other bonus payments in that deal as well. One of those deals suggests that Barcelona would pay an additional €1 million for every ten appearances made by the player.
These appearances, however, would only count towards that bonus clause if they involve the player participating in 45 minutes or more of any particular game. Coincidentally, that game against Barbastro in the Copa del Rey just so happened to have been Torre’s 9th such appearance.
Since then, he has only played 25 minutes across two separate games. That means that the 21-year-old midfielder is technically still yet to play that 10th game that would allow Racing Santander to get an additional €1 million from Barcelona for his ten such outings for the club.
In total, Torre’s appearance against UD Barbastro was his 25th official appearance for Barcelona, but it was only his 9th game in terms of having played 45 minutes or more in a single match. Moreover, his time at Girona did not count towards this bonus clause as only his minutes with Barcelona are considered.
However, there is simply no denying the player’s quality itself. Reportedly, despite his clear lack of minutes this season, the Barcelona midfielder wants to fight for a place and earn himself more opportunities. He has delivered some memorable cameos throughout his time at the club so far, but he seems to be aiming for something more.
