Bournemouth were left fuming over Evanilson’s red card after Manchester United denied them victory at Dean Court on Sunday.

The Cherries were leading thanks to a 23rd-minute goal from Antoine Semenyo when the Brazilian striker was sent off for going through the back of Noussair Mazraoui midway through the second half.

Rasmus Hojlund found an equaliser deep into stoppage time with his first shot of the game, dealing a blow to the south coast outfit’s hopes of qualifying for Europe. They remain tenth in the Premier League table.

“It is frustrating because the two points are massive,” Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola told BBC Match of the Day. “It changes our position in the standings a lot.”

Iraola argued that Evanilson should have avoided a red card like Casemiro and Dango Ouattara, both of whom got away with questionable challenges during the game. He added that the club will appeal the decision to try and overturn an automatic three-match ban.

“It is common sense,” he said. “Everyone who has played football knows he has slipped. He doesn’t catch him with the ball that goes high. The referee who is live does not think it is a red card. I need to see the process.

“It is like the free-kick for the foul on Evanilson by Casemiro in the first half. He doesn’t want to catch him as he looking at the ball but these things happen in football. I don’t think these situations are red cards.

“We will appeal but it doesn’t matter. It is two points that at this moment of the season. We now have to find points against some very difficult teams.”

Goalscorer Semenyo was baffled by referee Peter Bankes’ decision to send his teammate off.  “Everyone’s just frustrated,” he told Sky Sports. “There were challenges [like Evanilson’s] all game. It doesn’t make sense as to why that one was a red card.”

Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim, meanwhile, kept his counsel on the controversy. “I never comment on red cards, win, lose or draw,” he told Sky Sports.
