In a surprising development, Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly more inclined to sell their talented midfielder, Florian Wirtz, to either Barcelona or Real Madrid rather than letting him join their Bundesliga rivals, Bayern Munich.

This information comes from SPORT, highlighting that the German club is keen on preventing Wirtz from strengthening a direct competitor.

Recent reports from Germany suggest that Wirtz was considering staying in his home country, with a potential contract renewal at Bayer Leverkusen on the cards.

His family reportedly supports the idea of him staying in Germany, and a renewal would certainly be in their favour. However, the situation remains uncertain, and Leverkusen are careful in their approach to the player’s future.

Bayer’s reluctance

Leverkusen’s top priority is to avoid selling Wirtz to Bayern Munich. The club does not want to bolster a team that regularly competes with them for Bundesliga titles. Fernando Carro, the general director of Bayer Leverkusen, has made this stance clear.

In an interview on the Phrasenmäher podcast, Carro stated, “We certainly don’t want to strengthen our direct competitors in the league with top-level players.”

This indicates the club’s firm opposition to any deal that would see Wirtz move to Bayern Munich. While Wirtz has also been linked with moves to the Premier League, his potential transfer to Barcelona or Real Madrid appears to be more likely.

Positive news for Barcelona

At this moment, though, nothing has been confirmed. Bayer Leverkusen are still hoping to convince him to stay at the club.

Carro remains uncertain about Wirtz’s next move, acknowledging that anything can happen in football. He commented, “You can’t promise anything in football. We would be thrilled if he stayed with us forever.”

As of now, both Barcelona and Real Madrid remain interested in the young midfielder, but it seems that the summer of 2025 will provide a clearer understanding of Wirtz’s future. Whether he stays in Germany or makes a move to Spain, only time will tell.
