The decision-makers at Cardiff City have an important call to make this summer; here’s the picture as things stand

It’s going to be a busy summer for Cardiff City following relegation to League One.

The Bluebirds sacked former boss Omer Riza last month, before seeing their relegation to League One confirmed without a permanent replacement found.

Midfielder Aaron Ramsey took over the role in the interim, but a longer-term solution must be sought, along with the usual financial readjustments that come with a relegation.

Cardiff have had a significant managerial turnover in recent times and are now intent on appointing the club's next permanent manager, as preparations get away for the Welsh side's first season in League One since its inception more than 20 years...

Here, Football League World rounds up the latest news on Cardiff’s manager search…

Salford City boss Karl Robinson thrown into Cardiff City frame

It was revealed by Football Insider that current Salford City boss Karl Robinson is in contention to take the hot seat at Cardiff.

Indeed, that report described Robinson as a "top contender" to take over as Cardiff's next permanent manager following Riza's sacking last month, though it remains to be seen whether a formal approach will be lodged from the Welsh capital.

Alongside Salford, Robinson has previous management experience at Oxford United, Charlton Athletic and MK Dons, plus more low-key roles at Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool.

He took over the Ammies in a tough spot last January and managed to guide them to safety in 20th place, before a vast improvement this term has seen them skyrocket to eighth, sadly finishing just one point shy of the play-off places.

It’s a remarkable turnaround, but it is not an appointment that would be favoured by everyone, with our FLW Fan Pundit, Matt, issuing an “absolute strong no” to Robinson’s potential appointment.

Interim boss Aaron Ramsey unsure on future plans at Cardiff cIty

Following Riza’s departure, Bluebirds midfielder Aaron Ramsey stepped into the breach for the final three games of the season.

The captain’s contract with Cardiff expires this summer and, despite his new role and an injury that has kept him out for much of the season, has previously expressed a desire to continue playing.

Ramsey told BBC Sport: “I don't know. There are still a few things I need to sort out and have a think about over the coming weeks.

"But I love being in this role. I think the players have really bought into it. It's been a real joy to be in this role. I don't know is the answer. We'll see."

Ramsey has spoken previously about the need to appoint a new boss quickly and has never outright said he wants the job on a permanent basis, but he has also stopped short of entirely ruling himself out.

Stockport County, Charlton Athletic bosses admired by former Wales international

Speaking to the BBC’s Feast of Football podcast, former Wales international Iwan Roberts landed on two key targets he feels Cardiff should be looking at.

“I have got two names, the ex-Norwich City man said. “I am looking at Nathan Jones and what he's done at Charlton and at Dave Challinor, especially Dave Challinor because he's a name that doesn't get mentioned.

"He plays an attractive style of football and he has an attacking side to him. If I was the powers that be at Cardiff, whichever one of those two fails in the play-offs, I would be knocking on their door."

As mentioned by Roberts, both managers have their respective sides in the League One play-offs currently, so any move would need stalling for a few weeks.

Challinor may feel Cardiff is a sideways move given Stockport County’s current progress, with the club much further away from his hometown, Chester.
