CELTIC 1-0 DUNDEE UNITED – HAMPDEN, 29 MAY 2005 –  Not for the first time, Celtic fans approached Hampden on this dull, depressing, misty day in a state of depression, and needing to win the Scottish Cup to save a trophyless season. Sunday had been “Black Sunday” when the League had been thrown away at Motherwell.

It was Martin O’Neill’s last game as well, for he had resigned to look after his sick wife. But today Alan Thompson scored early in the game, and it stayed that way even though Chris Sutton missed a penalty and Dundee United almost scored with a terrific shot that went just over the bar near the end.

Celtic fans extend best wishes to Martin O’Neill’s wife Geraldine.

Scottish Cup Final 2005 saw Martin O’Neill bow out with a seventh trophy to his name. Rod Stewart travelled from US to lend support to the Celts. Chris Sutton missed penalty and It was first cup winners medals for McGeady, Hartson and Bellamy.

Douglas, McNamara, Valgaeren and Bellamy all play their last competitive games for Celtic while Paul Lambert is on the bench in his last time chosen in a Celtic team.

The Celtic team was: Douglas, Agathe, Balde, Varga, McNamara, Petrov, Lennon, Sutton, Thompson (McGeady), Hartson (Valgaeren), Bellamy. Scorer: Thompson.

Dundee United: Bullock, Wilson, Ritchie, Kenneth, Archibald, Kerr, McInnes (Samuel 76), Brebner (Duff 83), Robson, Crawford (Grady 83), Scotland.

Attendance: 50,635. Referee:- J Rowbotham

“It was a brilliant effort. We deserved to win, but like last week we couldn’t put the game away,” Martin O’Neill told BBC Scotland. “We missed some great chances and 1-0 is never enough. They hit the bar and that would have been harsh on us if that had gone in. It was a great final effort from what is a terrific bunch of players.”

“At least we had the opportunity to put it right again and where better than the Scottish Cup final?” Martin said.
