The Irishman is no stranger to these matches, as it was he himself who really etched Celtic’s name into modern European football with his great team of the early 2000’s.
At that time, Martin had created a team full of big characters like Sutton, Lennon and Balde and feared no foe at home or abroad for that matter. There is a vivid image of the great Frenhman Lizarazu celebrating at full-time back in the day when O’Neill was in charge, such was his delight that Munich had managed to evade defeat at fortress Paradise in the group stages way back in 2003/04.

Our team certainly took no prisoners then and although the face of the team now looks a lot different and they play a completely different style from O’Neill’s, he reckons that one thing that can always be guaranteed at Celtic Park on these nights is the atmosphere. Speaking to Premier Sports before this one, he said: “Oh really exciting for them,” he said.
“It’s been fantastic. I think the competition has really suited them, because you know, you’ve got the thirty-six teams in there. Your not playing the same team home and away. You’ve got a chance. There’s a change. I thought the old format was very tired. I actually like this particular format. And again, suiting a team like Celtic in this particular minute, in terms of their development, because only twelve teams dropped out of it.”

The man who led us to the UEFA Cup Final way back in 2003, continued: “Now they’ve got a phenomenal tie to look forward to. Celtic Park will be absolutely rocking tomorrow. And they deserved it as well too. So it will be absolutely terrific. And it’s like a throwback to the old days.”
When asked if he played Bayern Munich back in the day when he was in charge, he replied: “We did, absolutely. We played Bayern Munich. We drew at our ground. We were 1-0 up as well, too, in Munich. And I think it was the old stadium in Munich. You know, the old Olympic stadium, we were there. And we threw it away. I think it was Magnus Hedman was in our goal at the time. Well I have to say… he’ll not be listening tonight. But it was his fault!”
