Newcastle United have announced the signing of English youth international Charlotte Wardlaw. This deal will see Wardlaw join Becky Langley’s team as they strive for promotion to the Women’s Super League.

The 21-year-old who can play in midfield and also defence, is leaving the WSL leaders after coming through their academy. After making three senior appearances, Wardlaw signed her first professional contract ahead of the 2021/22 season. Since then, she has been sent out on multiple loan spells, gathering invaluable experience.

After signing her maiden professional contract, Wardlaw joined Liverpool on loan. During her time on Merseyside, she helped the Reds win the Championship title and achieve promotion back to the WSL.

The first half of this season saw Wardlaw return to the Championship after a spell in the Scottish Women’s Premier League. She most recently joined Sheffield United, where she made 12 appearances across all competitions.

Wardlaw is a promising talent for England with a wealth of leadership skills due to captaining the young Lionesses from U-15s to U-19s.

On her move, Wardlaw said: “There were lots of different factors that made this move the right one for my career: the history, tradition, the family feel of the club and ultimately the ambition. I’m really looking forward to getting to know everybody and to being a part of this huge club. The future for Newcastle in the women’s game is very exciting.”

Newcastle United currently sit seventh in their first season in the Championship. They are five points off league leaders Birmingham City and have a game in-hand. Wardlaw will be available to play against former side Sheffield United this Sunday, as the Magpies strive to make history and reach the WSL.
