Star man Palmer scored 24 goals, and provided 13 assists, in a stunning debut season at Stamford Bridge under Mauricio Pochettino, before Maresca was appointed in the summer.

Palmer has already notched six goals and five assists in eight games this season, including a four-goal first-half haul against Brighton and a hat-trick of assists against Wolves.

And the former Manchester City youngster says new manager Maresca's decision to move him into a central role is key to a remarkable early season haul.

He told The Telegraph: "Playing centrally has given me more opportunities to influence the game. I enjoy being involved in the build-up and making key passes as well as scoring.

"It suits my style, and I think I can be even more effective there."

Palmer will be watching from the sidelines on Thursday as Chelsea take on Panathinaikos, having been omitted from the club's Conference League squad as, according to his manager, he needs to "be protected".

Asked if he has any worries over his fitness, Palmer replied: "Not really. The management’s decision was for the best, and I’m focused on keeping fit and ready for the next opportunities.”

Palmer was in August rewarded with a new contract, less than a year after joining from City, extending his stay until 2033 on a remarkable nine-year deal.

Asked if he feels like he could end his career with Chelsea, Palmer said: “Absolutely. Chelsea feels like home to me, and I’m excited about what we can achieve together.

“I’m fully committed to the club and its future.”
