Chelsea could have “a huge amount of funds” to spend on “winger and striker” | OneFootball

The Athletic’s deal sheet had an end of window edition to sum up how each club had done in January.

Simon Johnson’s coverage in it of Chelsea tries to spin positive, pointing out that the Blues managed to move on a lot of players they didn’t want (despite the fact that the manager did, in fact, want some of them) and pointing to the recall of Trevoh Chalobah as an upgrade to options in the defensive line.

The idea of loaning all those players out is that some (perhaps even all, if the sporting directors get their wish) those players can be sold in the summer. In the majority of cases we’d imagine we’re set to make a net loss, because we overpaid in the first place, but that still means an injection of cash for the summer.

And the Blues won’t be afraid to spend it. Johnson’s article says that they will have money to spent in the summer, and that qualifying for the Champions League would boost that further:

“Qualifying for the Champions League will help give them more but Chelsea’s business model has used sales to generate a huge amount of funds in the past and the next close season will be no different.”

He then goes on to name their “priority for the summer ” as being a “winger and a striker.”

So now we just have to hope that the shedding of so many squad players doesn’t come back to bite us by making it harder to reach the top 4. A couple of important recent wins have steadied things slightly, but performances aren’t great, and we will need to really get rolling again to make that a reality.
