Chelsea are preparing for a pivotal summer transfer window that will make or break the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital consortium project.
Since they arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2022, the Blues have not challenged for the Premier League and look a far cry from the team that collected accolades under Roman Abramovich.
This summer, Chelsea must plug pivotal holes in the squad and make crucial decisions regarding some players on their books to return to the top of the food chain. Signing a striker, goalkeeper, and defender is a must.
The Blues must also sign a new left winger and decide what to do with Jadon Sancho. The 24-year-old joined Chelsea on loan from Manchester United and impressed in his first few games.
However, Sancho has been atrocious since the turn of the year. It has led to talks that Chelsea might return him to the Red Devils without paying the £25 million buy option.
The report mentions that Chelsea are determined to sign a left-sided forward. But it is primarily because of the uncertainty around Mykhailo Mudryk, who is suspended for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. They have not decided on Sancho.
Sancho’s return of two goals and six assists in 29 appearances this season does not move the needle for a club like Chelsea.
The Blues need more from their wingers, and Sancho is guilty of failing to deliver the goods. Chelsea must pay the money and let the England international return to Old Trafford.
Chelsea academy starlet Tyrique George has four assists in 18 outings (mostly) from the bench. If he had Sancho’s minutes, he’d deliver similar numbers.
The West Londoners should sign a lethal left winger like Rodrygo Goes or Bradley Barcola and allow George to deputise for the new addition. The Blues also have players like Pedro Neto, who can play on the left.
