Chelsea will be ‘opportunistic’ should Aston Villa midfielder Morgen Rogers become available for sale this summer.

The West Londoners are interested in a deal to sign the England international, who starred during a breakout campaign for Aston Villa last season.

Rogers scored 14 goals and provided 15 assists in all competitions as Villa secured a top-six finish and reached the Champions League quarter-finals. He was named Aston Villa’s Young Player of the Season for 2024/25 and is among the favourites for the PFA equivalent.

The midfielder made his England debut in November to cap a rapid rise at Villa Park. Rogers joined The Villans from Championship club Middlesbrough for a fee of just £8m in January 2024.

Aston Villa have no intention of selling Rogers, who is a key part of the club’s project under Unai Emery. That stance is unlikely to change despite the club’s tight Premier League Profit and Sustainability (PSR) situation.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire this week warned that Villa could have around just £50m to spend on signings this summer, while the club need to reduce their wage bill to comply with UEFA’s financial rules for European competition.

Despite that situation, Rogers is not currently a player up for sale, with Emi Martinez and Leon Bailey among those likelier to depart.

However, transfer journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Chelsea will be opportunistic if there becomes a chance that Rogers is available.

Enzo Maresca worked with Rogers in the Manchester City academy, where he played alongside Chelsea stars Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia and imminent arrival Liam Delap.
