Atletico Madrid’s interest in Inigo Martinez was stronger than many realised, as reports now reveal that Diego Simeone was keen to bring the Barcelona defender to the Wanda Metropolitano last year.

According to SPORT, The Argentine manager had identified Martinez as a key target, believing the Spaniard’s defensive qualities would have been a perfect addition to his squad.

During that period in 2024, Martinez was not a regular under Xavi, which made him an attractive option for Simeone. Despite this, the defender remained committed to Barcelona and had no intentions of leaving.

While Atletico Madrid explored the possibility of securing his services, Martinez had already set his sights on making an impact at the Catalan club.

Ultimately, Atletico turned their attention elsewhere, securing the signing of Robin Le Normand for nearly €25 million. However, sources indicate that Martinez was actually Simeone’s top priority, even before considering other defensive options such as Clément Lenglet.

Contract extension on the horizon

Since then, the experienced centre-back has flourished under Hansi Flick, becoming a key figure in the German coach’s tactical setup. So far this season, he has played 31 matches in all competitions, contributing three goals and four assists.

His performances have been instrumental in Barcelona’s defensive structure, solidifying his importance in the team.

With his current contract set to expire at the end of the season, discussions surrounding his future have gained momentum. It is now being reported that an agreement has been reached between the player and Barcelona for a contract extension.

Details of the contract

Martinez already has a clause in his deal that grants him an automatic extension if he features in 60% of Barcelona’s matches this season—a target he is close to meeting.

However, due to his impressive form and consistency, both the club and Hansi Flick initiated renewal talks well before that threshold was reached.

As a result, Barcelona have decided to extend his stay until 2026, ensuring his role in the squad remains secure. His new deal will reportedly keep him on the same salary, which stands at approximately €4 million per season.
