This morning, at around 09:00 GMT, Thomas Tuchel announced his much anticipated first ever squad as England manager, for World Cup qualifiers at home to Albania ad Latvia later on this month.
One of the players picked for the squad is Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke, whom is one of two strikers selected, along with former Spurs striker Harry Kane. Other striker Ollie Watkins went off injured in Aston Villa's Champions League second leg tie against Club Brugge in midweek.
The striker was having a strong first season in North London, but an injury in January hampered his momentum. He has come back from that injury in the last few games, and registered two assists for Wilson Odobert in the 3-1 win over AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League round of 16 second leg that took place last night.
Back in 2017, Solanke made his debut for England as a 20-year old, coming on as a substitute in a friendly with Brazil at Wembley. After a seven year absence, he received his next call up in the autumn of last year, and won his second and third caps against Greece and the Republic of Ireland at Wembley in the Nations League.
With. as mentioned, a player like Kane in the squad - it's probably unlikely that Solanke gets too much game time - though that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Spurs have missed him a lot when he has been injured, and they are going to need him in the Europa League. Having some rest over the break won't do any harm.
Furthermore, with both games taking place at Wembley, there will be no fatigue or jet lag from travelling across Europe, which is handy too. That said, if there is another opportunity for him and Kane to play together, like they did briefly in the aforementioned game against the Republic of Ireland, that would still be pretty cool to see.
It is a shame, at least from the players perspective, that he won't be joined by any of his club team mates, with both Djed Spence and James Maddison snubbed from the squad. A real shame for both players, even if them getting two weeks rest is beneficial to Spurs. More on those exclusions in a separate piece later on today.
The game against Albania, which is on Friday, the 21st of March at 19:45 GMT - is particularly likely to see Solanke on the bench, with Tuchel surely wanting to go with his strongest side for his first game. The game against Latvia, On Monday, the 24th of March at 19:45 GMT, could see him start, particularly against a lesser opponent. Still, pretty happy either way given the reasons mentioned above.
