The FA have reportedly identified their “dream” manager to take charge of England, but are yet to interview any of the leading candidates.

The Three Lions do not have a permanent head coach in place after Gareth Southgate stepped down following defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024.

U21’s manager Lee Carsley is leading the squad on an interim basis while the Association conducts its search for a successor to the role.

A number of high profile names have been linked with the vacant, including Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel. The former Chelsea bosses are both out of work and presumably free to be interviewed.

Eddie Howe is another name on the FA’s shortlist, although the Newcastle United is said to have no interest in taking the job and is happy at St James’ Park. His release clause is reportedly set at £6 million, which may be more than the sporting body are willing to pay.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is viewed as the “dream long-term candidate”, according to The Telegraph, with the FA possibly “prepared to wait for the Spaniard if he gave it any encouragement”. His current contract expires next summer.

Although the FA have made overtures to some candidates about the England job, it’s claimed that “formal interviews have not yet taken place”, despite the fact that 2 August was the closing date for applications.

Carsley is considered the favourite to replace Southgate permanently by the bookies, but his chances have been dented by Thursday night’s 2-1 defeat to Greece at Wembley.

“I said at the start that I wouldn’t rule myself in or out, and that is still the case. I’m comfortable in my position where I am and the remit is clear,” he told the media after the game.
