Eddie Howe Southampton press conference on Friday:
Eddie Howe on Southampton and that opening day of the season, when 10 men Newcastle United still won 1-0:
“It was a really difficult game against a newly promoted team.
“They showed their qualities that day, they are a very technical team.
“They have a very aggressive man-to-man style off the ball, so we are going to have to deal with that.”
Eddie Howe on looking for a response to the Bournemouth defeat:
“We need to learn from Bournemouth, we need a response.
“I have no doubt the players will respond.
“We will go to Southampton absolutely focused.
“Southampton are a proud football club.
“We will have to be at our absolute best.”
Eddie Howe on having a week without a midweek fixture:
“It is a good thing.
“When you look back at the Bournemouth game, the players looked fatigued.
“It has given us a chance to rest a few bodies and minds and get back to work.”
Eddie Howe on Nick Pope and Callum Wilson:
“There is a chance Nick will be in the squad [for Southampton], he has started training with the group again, it’s great to see.
“With Callum we are looking at the beginning of February. He is making good progress. We are trying to do the right things by him before he starts training with the group.”
Eddie Howe on Sven Botman:
“It was a challenge for Sven, he has been magnificent since he returned, he has been thrust into action, by and large he has been excellent.
“He is one we will look after.”
