Yann Sommer was between the sticks as Inter Milan kept another Serie A clean sheet in a 2-0 victory at top-four rivals Atalanta last night.
Speaking to InterTV via FCInterNews, the Swiss goalkeeper admitted Inter’s showing at the Gewiss Stadium impressed him.
Despite Inter’s long-standing dominance in this fixture, beating Atalanta in Bergamo is always daunting.
However, Simone Inzaghi’s charges defied an ongoing injury crisis to take home three crucial points.
It wasn’t plain sailing by any means.
After a goalless first half, the Nerazzurri grabbed the lead through Carlos Augusto.
But the game hung in the balance until the final moments.
Ederson’s expulsion in the 81st minute put more wind into Inter’s sails before Lautaro Martinez struck a hammer blow.
Therefore, Inter will spend March’s international break three points clear of second-placed Napoli.
With nine games to go, Inzaghi’s men are well-positioned to defend their crown.
“At the end of the day, it’s a win like any other,” Sommer said. “We still have nine matches left, but this was a game we had to take advantage of.
“We can be a bit more relaxed in the coming days, but then it’s time to focus on the next challenges.

“Atalanta are a strong and fast team, so we needed the right mentality.
“When we play like this, we make it tough for any opponent. We had other chances too, and we could have won by a bigger margin.
“But we’re happy with the result.”
Meanwhile, he appreciates the upcoming two-week hiatus from club football.
“Rest is crucial, both mentally and physically. It allows us to recover energy and then shift focus to the next game.”
Finally, the star stopper offered an update on his physical condition after undergoing thumb surgery last month.
“My finger is much better, and today was a great win,” he claimed.
“We played really well in every aspect – staying compact, winning duels, and keeping the right distances in all situations.
“This was a very important performance, and we’re happy with it.”
