Charles, who joined the Saints from Manchester City, played a pivotal role for the Owls in the Championship, earning their Player of the Year award after making 43 league appearances and six goal involvements.

While Charles is expected to return as a key figure for Will Still’s side in 2024/25, interest from the Premier League may test Southampton’s resolve - especially as they face a summer of transition.

Questions are already being asked about how crucial it is for new Southampton boss Will Still to keep hold of the Saints’ young prospects.

After impressing on loan at Sheffield Wednesday last season, could Charles be central to Southampton’s plans - or will financial realities force the club to cash in?

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Don Goodman weighed in on the importance of this summer for both Southampton, Shea Charles and their new manager:

“Hugely important summer for Southampton and Will Still and what they can achieve will largely depend on who they can keep,” Goodman told FLW.

“And I think Shea Charles, having been on loan at Sheffield Wednesday almost all of last season, started 42 out of the 46 games, and you could argue was Sheffield Wednesday’s best player.

“I think keeping him would be a huge benefit for Will Still, but then on the other hand it’s a club that needs to decide how it wants to juggle it’s finances and how ambitious it wants to be, and we’ll learn a lot this summer from who Southampton retain and who they let go, as to how they see their future.”

Will Still’s arrival at Southampton marks a fresh start after a turbulent period, and his reputation as a progressive, ambitious coach has brought a sense of optimism back to St Mary’s.

The 32-year-old’s appointment signals a desire to rebuild with purpose and identity - qualities that will be vital in the Championship.

However, for Still’s project to truly take shape, keeping hold of top talent like Shea Charles could prove crucial.

The midfielder’s breakout campaign with the Owls showcased his maturity, versatility, and ability to influence games at this level, making him a valuable asset not only on the pitch, but also as a symbol of the Saints' future direction.
