Filip Jorgensen Under Pressure After Costly Aston Villa Mistake

Enzo Maresca’s first season in charge of Chelsea has been turbulent, and recent goalkeeping errors have only added to his concerns. Filip Jorgensen, brought in to stabilise the position, endured another difficult evening as his mistake gifted Aston Villa a 2-1 victory. With the game finely poised at 1-1, Marco Asensio’s tame effort slipped under the 22-year-old, condemning Chelsea to yet another disappointing result.
It was the second successive match in which Jorgensen has struggled. He was heavily criticised in the 3-0 defeat to Brighton, having replaced Robert Sanchez as Maresca’s first-choice goalkeeper. Chelsea’s inability to secure a world-class goalkeeper, despite significant investment in other areas, has left fans questioning the club’s decision-making at boardroom level.

Following the loss at Villa Park, Maresca gave little reassurance regarding Jorgensen’s long-term future. “The keeper position is very delicate,” he admitted. “When they make a mistake, it’s clear for everyone. Unfortunately, Filip made a mistake. But in this moment, he’s our keeper and we need to stay strong and continue to support each other.”
It was hardly a ringing endorsement. The Italian coach was keen to highlight that both Jorgensen and Sanchez have performed well in some games, but the lack of confidence from Maresca was evident. Chelsea supporters will be well aware of how quickly the club can move on from players who fail to convince.
Jorgensen arrived at Stamford Bridge from Villarreal in the summer for around £20 million, signing a seven-year deal. Yet, just months into his Chelsea career, his position is under threat. The club has already secured the signing of Mike Penders from Genk, with the teenager set to join at the end of the season.
Despite his struggles, Maresca has so far resisted calls to recall Kepa Arrizabalaga from his loan spell at Real Madrid. Instead, he had backed Jorgensen and Sanchez to compete for the No.1 spot. However, with neither proving reliable, it would be no surprise if Chelsea were actively scouting a new goalkeeper ahead of the summer transfer window.

Maresca’s comments suggest Chelsea will be in the market for a new goalkeeper come the summer. Jorgensen, despite showing promise at Villarreal, has failed to convince, while Sanchez has been unconvincing since arriving from Brighton. If Chelsea are to challenge for major honours under Maresca, they will need a more secure presence between the posts.
With Aston Villa exposing their frailties, Chelsea’s recruitment team may soon be forced into action. The question now is whether Maresca persists with Jorgensen for the remainder of the season or begins the search for a new No.1 before the campaign concludes.
