Curtis Jones – Liverpool and England

Curtis Jones has been on the fringes of the England squad since the summer, earning a first call-up for the provisional squad ahead of Euro 2024. The 23-year-old now joins the senior set-up, where he will reunite with Lee Carsley after winning the 2023 u-21 European Championship under the current interim boss.

Jones’ start to the season was delayed due to injury but he shone during Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Crystal Palace last weekend. The midfielder has often operated in a deeper role under Carsley. He could be given the chance to impress this month after u-21 midfield partner Angel Gomes stood out on his full senior debut in September.

“Curtis Jones would be up there with the most talented players I’ve worked with,” Carsley said this week.

“He’s got everything that you need as a midfielder. He can run, he is very, very fast, he’s powerful, he can score, he can assist, he can defend, he can take the ball – all he needs is opportunity. The way he’s played when I’ve seen him play, he’s been outstanding. He just needed to stay fit.”

Tino Livramento – Newcastle and England

Another inclusion in the England squad this month, Livramento joined Jones in earning a call-up after the withdrawals of Ezri Konsa, Kobbie Mainoo and Morgan Gibbs-White.

The 21-year-old has featured in all seven of Newcastle’s Premier League games this season, as he looks to nail down a regular role in Eddie Howe’s plans. Comfortable in either full-back role, his versatility is a valuable asset to England in the absence of several established options.

Ian Maatsen – Aston Villa and Netherlands

Ian Maatsen earned his first inclusion with the Netherlands in September 2023 but 13 months later is still awaiting a first appearance in the Oranje.

Maatsen moved to Aston Villa from Chelsea in a £33m deal in the summer but has had a slow start to his career with the club. The 22-year-old has started just one of his 10 appearances across all competitions and has totalled just 242 minutes.

However, the expectation is that Maatsen will break into the side and he will be hoping the international break can kickstart his campaign. He proved his quality with inclusion in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season in 2023/24 as Dortmund reached the final.

Renato Veiga – Chelsea and Portugal

Renato Veiga is back in the Portugal squad after last month’s maiden call and will be hoping to debut as Roberto Martinez’s team take on Poland and Scotland this month.

The 21-year-old has become a Swiss Army Knife of a footballer for Enzo Maresca since his £11.7m arrival from Basel in the summer. At 6ft 3in, Veiga can operate at left-back, midfield, or as a central defender.

Caleb Okoli – Leicester City and Italy

Caleb Okoli could debut for Italy this month after Luciano Spalletti selected the Leicester centre-back in his plans for October. The 23-year-old is a summer signing at the King Power Stadium having arrived from Atalanta for a fee of £12.6m.

He’s made five Premier League appearances for Steve Cooper’s side and helped Leicester to their first win of the campaign against Bournemouth last weekend. Okoli excelled alongside Wout Faes to help Leicester to a clean sheet, with five defensive duels won and a huge 10 clearances.
