The DFL have named Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz as the Bundesliga’s Player of the Month for December, beating Paul Nebel (Mainz), Mitchell Weiser (Werder Bremen), Nick Woltemade (Stuttgart), Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich).
In December, Wirtz registered six goal contributions with goals against St. Pauli, Augsburg and Freiburg, and a hat-trick of assists against the latter in a 5-1 win – the most of any Bundesliga player last month.
As noted by Bundesliga.com, it’s also the first time Wirtz has recorded a goal contribution in three consecutive league fixtures.
Speaking after Bayer Leverkusen’s 5-1 win against Freiburg, Fernando Carro, the club’s CEO, spoke on the player’s future: “We are hoping that Florian plays for as long as possible. We would love to have him next season until the 2026 World Cup, and we will gladly extend his contract.”
As reported in November, Bayer Leverkusen are in talks with Wirtz’ entourage to extend the player’s contract beyond 2027, despite interest from Europe’s elite clubs.
