Celtic FC Foundation’s annual Golf Day returned last Friday, as Renfrew Golf Club played host to the event for a tenth time. A magnificent net total in the region of £15,000 was raised, with the main beneficiary being our Paradise Pit Stop project.

The event was sponsored once again by GMG Contractors Ltd - an award-winning, multi-disciplinary provider in the construction industry - and we were delighted to welcome a GMG team who took part on the day, playing alongside Celtic legend and Club Ambassador, Tom Boyd.

And Tom was not the only former Celt in attendance, with Stephen McManus, Simon Donnelly and Cillian Sheridan taking on 24 other teams, while another Golf Day regular -Lisbon Lion John Fallon - also joined us later in the day in the clubhouse.

The day kicked off with breakfast rolls before the obligatory group photo at the 10th hole, followed by tee-off at 10am.

Following the golf, attendees then enjoyed a spot of lunch before a fantastic Q&A with the former Celts, led by our host Gerry McCulloch, as each shared stories from their time with the Club.

The scores were then tallied and this year’s winners were announced. Congratulations once again to the team ‘Where’s Brian?’ – Bernie Devlin, David Miller, Jim McKechnie and Ross Fletcher – who were crowned winners of our tenth Golf Day.

Along with the trophy, they’ll also enjoy a fourball at Turnberry’s Robert the Bruce course in South Ayrshire, kindly donated by Foundation supporter Pat Dunese.

Proceedings were then wrapped up with a wonderful auction and prize draw.

Celtic FC Foundation’s Paradise Pit Stop project launched at the beginning of 2023, when we first opened the stadium doors to provide a free warm meal and a selection of hot and soft drinks, in a safe and non-judgmental space for individuals and families.

Since its inception, this project has been delivered every Monday and Thursday evening, from 5pm–7pm and in November 2023, we hosted the first of our Paradise Pit Stop Lunch Breaks, to further combat the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. This has seen us also make the stadium available to those in need of our support on a Wednesday and Friday afternoon, from 12noon–2pm, now allowing us to provide support four days a week.

Paradise Pit Stop is about more than just food – it serves as a safe, inclusive environment where individuals and families from some of Glasgow’s most vulnerable communities can access a hot meal, feel valued and gain access to essential support services. Our aim is to provide relief from food poverty and tackle the increasing issue of loneliness and isolation in our communities.

The project also connects participants with broader support networks and addresses many of the issues faced in our local communities, including mental health, housing and addiction.

Celtic FC Foundation Chief Executive, Tony Hamilton, expressed his gratitude to all of those who have contributed, saying: “We are thrilled to have returned to Renfrew Golf Club for a tenth time and once again, the Golf Day has been a tremendous success.

“Over the years, we’ve had some wonderful days at Renfrew and they’ve looked after us very well, so I would like to thank everyone at the Club for hosting us once again.

"The funds raised will make a big difference to the lives of the participants that we support through our Paradise Pit Stop project, which is helping those most in need in our communities.

“Huge thank you again to our Golf Day sponsor, GMG Contractors Ltd, for their magnificent and continued backing of our efforts.

“Thank also to all of the golfers for joining us, including the former Celts – Tom, Stephen, Simon, Cillian and John.

“And thank you to all of those who donated items for our auction, prize draw or as tournament prizes, including – Pat Dunese, Brian Mellon of Avoca Wealth Management, Ewan Murray, Mark Lappin, Anthony Cecchini, Stephen Gallacher and many, many more – as well as Bell & Bain, who kindly donated printed materials for the day.”
