Despite all the doubts about his level after returning from injury and the debate about his salary, Hansi Flick was always clear about his view on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The manager saw the Dutchman as a key part of his project at the club and never lost faith even though there were moments when the midfielder appeared to be struggling after his lengthy injury layoff.

Months later, Flick’s belief has translated into a full revival of De Jong’s role, making him central to Barça’s plans on the field.

Frenkie de Jong wants to sign a new contract

As such, SPORT reports that Flick’s trust, coupled with his increased prominence, has fully convinced De Jong about staying at Barcelona, with only financial terms left on a new deal to be settled – a process already underway with the club’s sporting directors.

Doubts had surrounded De Jong at Barcelona. His injury struggles, his tense relationship with the club, especially after Manchester United’s bid for him, and his inconsistent performances in recent years had created uncertainty.

However, Flick was certain that De Jong was one of the squad’s best midfielders and was determined to bring out his full potential.

The German’s management of the midfielder has been flawless. He eased De Jong back into action after injury and, since January, has fully trusted him over Marc Casado, who had performed well in his absence.

De Jong has responded with his best form since joining the club, with his standout performance of the season coming against Benfica last night.

Renewal talks underway

Flick has played a direct role in pushing the club to secure De Jong’s future beyond 2026. Deco has reopened discussions with his agent and Barcelona have presented a revised three-year offer, with both sides working towards an agreement.

The midfielder feels valued, sees himself as a starter, and, most importantly, believes in the team’s project and its potential to win major titles. That belief could be the key to finalising a deal.

The main challenge now is financial. Barcelona must settle De Jong’s deferred wages before 2026, after which they aim to extend his contract by three more years while maintaining his current salary.
