Henderson's departure from the Eredivisie giants appeared all but certain as he was stood down as captain before Thursday's Europa League clash with Galatasaray.

But the England international clarified the situation over his immediate future following a 2-1 win for Francesco Farioli's side over rivals Feyenoord on Sunday.

“As you could see in the game against Galatasaray, I didn’t know what was going to happen,”  said Henderson.

“After that, I had a number of conversations with the club. Fortunately, we came to the conclusion together that it is best to stay until the end of the season.

“My plan was to stay anyway. A lot was written that was taken out of context; lies, things that weren’t true. It was disrespectful. About how I was as a person and that I had behaved unprofessionally.

“That’s not true and that hurts. Things about my performance on the field are fine with me, but about me personally, that hurts."

Addressing the captaincy issue, Henderson insisted that the move was a personal choice as the wrangle over his future at the Amsterdam club continued.

He added: “The reason I wasn’t captain was because I knew what was going on in the background.

"Then it didn’t feel comfortable to be captain that night. But I just did my job. I gave everything and was fully focused.

“I didn’t know what would happen. It could have been my last match.

"The club is in a certain financial situation and I wanted to think about that.

"My salary is always a thing in the media. But we came to the conclusion that this is the best thing.”

Ajax's late win over their arch-rivals ensured they remain two points behind PSV Eindhoven at the Eredivisie's summit with a game in hand.
