Chelsea are delighted with the development of Andrey Santos at Strasbourg this season and he’s a key part of the club’s project according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues signed Santos back in the summer of 2022 from Brazilian side Vasco da Gama for a reported fee of £13m.

The 20-year-old has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Blues and is currently on his second loan spell at sister club Strasbourg in Ligue 1.

Chelsea delighted with Santos development

Santos was sent on loan to Nottingham Forest last season, but that loan turned out to be a disaster with the Brazilian hardly kicking a ball and he was recalled last January and sent to Strasbourg.

After a slow start in France he started to find his feet and put in a series of impressive performances under Patrick Viera.

There were some calls for Santos to be part of the Chelsea squad this season, but he was sent back to Strasbourg, where he’s been outstanding and arguably their best player.

Given Chelsea’s lack of depth in midfield due to Romeo Lavia’s constant injury issues, and a seeming lack of trust in Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, there’s been talk of Santos being recalled, but that seems very unlikely to happen.

Romano has now provided an update on the midfielder and what Chelsea’s future plans are for the impressive youngster.

He took to X.com and said:

“Chelsea are delighted with Andrey Santos’ development at Strasbourg under Rosenior. 7 goals scored in 18 Ligue1 games, playing as central midfielder.

“He’s always been considered key part of future Chelsea project, as #CFC rejected bids from several clubs last summer.”

Santos is said to be attracting interest from some of Europe’s top clubs, whilst Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior has praised him for his leadership.

Whilst Chelsea could desperately do with Santos now, another six months of playing regular football is going to really help his development and he should be ready to make an impact at Stamford Bridge next season.
