Brentford B left Allsvenskan side IFK Göteborg stunned following a 2-1 win at the Estádio Algarve on Wednesday evening in the Atlantic Cup.

Brentford put in an incredible display throughout the whole 90 minutes, with a Iwan Morgan finish on the brink of half-time taking the side into the interval level following an earlier Göteborg goal. Despite making six changes in the second half, Brentford went on to win the game with Caelan Avenell scoring just his second goal for the club.

The young Bees headed into their second Atlantic Cup fixture knowing it would be a stern test coming up against Swedish first division side IFK Göteborg.

Neil MacFarlane named four changes to the side which faced CD Mafra on Sunday, with Julian Eyestone, Vonnte Williams, Ethan Brierley and Iwan Morgan all brought into the side.

Brentford were the side who saw their first chance come their way following a well worked counter-attack.

A quick give and go between Isaac Holland and Ben Krauhaus ended in the winger delivering a great ball into Ethan Brierley, the midfielder’s effort from close range went inches wide.

Göteborg moved the ball incredibly well and were a clear threat in the attacking third, the Swedish side had a great chance to take the lead on 15 minutes, but Imam Jagne’s effort went wide.

Four minutes later another great chance well to Göteborg, this time a cross from the left flank found Jones Bager at the far post with the full-back struggling to make any real contact on the ball as it went wide.

Brentford were forced to defend for most of the opening half with the more experienced Göteborg keeping the young Bees on their toes with their constant movement off the ball.

Eyestone was called into action a few times in the opening half, but perhaps his best save came on 28 minutes when the keeper got down well to stop Tobias Heintz’s shot from inside the box.

Benjamin Arthur was next to save the young Bees stopping Heintz’s shot on the line moments after the winger’s previous chance, as the scoreline remained level.

It was constant pressure from Göteborg who saw their next effort crash off the bar following a long range shot from Jagne.

Brentford did look a threat when they worked together a counter-attack with Vonnte Williams and Holland providing width on the flanks.

Depsite all of Brentford’s good defending, Göteborg did eventually get themselves ahead when a flicked-on corner bounced off Benjamin Arthur before finding the back of the net.

To Brentford’s credit they didn’t let the goal knock them and on the brink of half-time found an equaliser through Morgan.

Holland was involved again, this time showing incredible strength to hold off a Göteborg defender before delivering a perfect cross to Morgan whose shot riffled into the roof of the net.

Brentford started the second half well and were playing some great football with the late goal in the first half giving the side confidence.

Göteborg were intense with their press throughout the match, but the young Brentford side were showing their quality as they often beat the press with some great play in the second half.

MacFarlane made six changes all at once on 68 minutes as he aimed to spread the minutes across the squad.

The substitutes made an incredible impact with another stunner counter-attack ending in a goal for Brentford.

Ethan Laidlaw did brilliantly on the right flank beating two men before crossing to Avenell who ran from right-back to head the ball home.

The young Bees still had a lot to do with 20 minutes to play but their threat on the break continued.

Max Dickov, another Brentford sub found himself through on goal following a long ball over the Göteborg defence, but his effort was well saved.

MacFarlane’s side showed incredible character to see out their lead pulling off a brilliant result beating a Göteborg side who compete in the Allsvenskan.
