After having only obtained a total of three points out 15 available within their last five Serie A matches, The Giallorossi find themselves in 12th with a total of 14 points, one of their most horrendous starts to a campaign in over 30 years as they have a conceded 17 goals and only found the back of the net 13 times after match-week 12.

Consequently, after dismissing former skipper Daniele De Rossi from his duties in the dug-out, the board have ultimately decided to sack former Torino boss Ivan Juric following their disappointing 3-2 defeat to Bologna at the Olimpico, making Juric’s era the shortest ever for a Giallorossi coach within the club’s history.

In a state of emergency, the capital club turns towards coach Claudio Ranieri as the third coach this season in the hopes of diffusing the situation and leading Roma out of this abysmal crisis. La Gazzetta dello Sport analyzes how the Italian tactician just might be able to achieve his objective by the end of the 2024/25 season.

Throughout his career, coach Ranieri has continuously proven to be a superb leader by providing a commanding presence, getting his philosophy and ideas across his players in swift fashion, and getting the best characteristics out of his players.

His recipe for success has seemed to work continuously, allowing his 2009/10 Roma side go toe-to-toe with Mourinho’s Inter that won the treble, as the Giallorossi came second in the league standings by only a difference of two points and fell short in a 1-0 defeat in the Coppa Italia finals against the Nerazzurri that very same season.

Furthermore, Ranieri managed to win a historical Premier League with Leicester, defying all the odds as the Foxes managed to clinch the title throughout the 2015/16 season after slightly surviving relegation the season prior.

Given that coach Claudio Ranieri loves to overload with crosses and stretch the opposition with long passes up-front on the counter rather than hold possession, the Italian tactician has always favoured his classic 4-4-2 set-up.

Ranieri has also deployed a proactive 4-2-3-1 whilst in England, but most recently utilized a 3-5-2 throughout his tenure at Cagliari, one formation that would perhaps be best fit for the Giallorossi.

The 3-5-2 would be drastically different compared to the one of Juric, an orderly team with a low block that closes the gaps in between each department.

Given Ranieri’s admiration for experienced players, Hummels, Hermoso and Ndicka would be expected to fill the back-three. Angelino would be deployed as a wing-back and Celik on the opposite flank, who could be easily replaced by Saeleamaekers once he is fully fit after recovering from his injury.

As per the midfield, Kone would be the ideal starter given his ability to play box-to-box, leaving the other two vacancies up for grabs. One side would be occupied by Le Fee or Parades, while Pellegrini and Pisilli would fight for the other spot.

In the attack, Argentine Paulo Dybala would lead the front-line along side Artem Dovbyk despite his recent struggles since recently joining from Girona.

However, the use of a 3-4-2-1 formation is an option that can’t be ruled out as well if Ranieri seeks to utilize Soule and El Shaarawy along the flanks to provide a boost up-top.

As an individual who played for the Giallorossi and coached the capital club on numerous occasions, coach Ranieri is one that is loved by the fans and respected by the players, as his veins are filled with Giallorosso given his comprehension of the history and the values of the club.

The combination for his love for the club and his tactical style that is filled with intelligence depicts that perhaps Ranieri might just be the ideal candidate to help Roma climb out of this deep abyss and turn this year’s season around.
