The international break could not have gotten off to a worse start for Bayern Munich. Midfielder João Palhinha has suffered an adductor injury whilst away with the Portugal national team, which is most notably set to keep him out of games against Paris Saint-Germain, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Dortmund.

Aleksandar Pavlović is already out for a while, and will do well to see the pitch before the winter break. So, what does Vincent Kompany do when it comes to finding a partner for Joshua Kimmich?

What Bayern Munich should do in the absence of João Palhinha

In the win over St. Pauli, there was a rare start given to Leon Goretzka, but it is safe to say that the midfielder did not take his chance. There is no doubt the 29-year old has been a good servant for the club, but he is simply not as the requisite level to start important games anymore.

Recently, in another piece, we discussed what Bayern could do when they need to give Kimmich a rest – and suggested playing Raphael Guerreiro in midfield, with Konrad Laimer at right-back. So in theory, you could suggest that here, just with Guerreiro next to Kimmich, rather than to replace him when he needs a rest.

However, that was with the idea of the 31-year old partnering his compatriot Palhinha in midfield, which is no longer possible (for at least the next few games). A midfield two of Guerreiro and Kimmich feels a bit lightweight, and easy to play through. As a result, Kompany could swap the two, playing Laimer in midfield to give some speed and physicality, with Guerreiro at right-back.

There is also the option to play Eric Dier in midfield, who has played multiple games there in his career for numerous sides. But, whilst he has a bit more defensive steel than Guerreiro, he most certainly lacks the speed and athleticism required, and Bayern could be found wanting in transition.
