Mateus Fernandes is one of a number of prized assets likely to leave Southampton following the club's relegation to the Championship.

It would be no surprise to see the likes of Tyler Dibling and Aaron Ramsdale, along with Fernandes, earn moves away from the south coast in the coming weeks and months.

Southampton may find it difficult to keep some of the club's more impressive players, having suffered relegation after just one campaign as one of the Premier League's worst-ever sides.

It has been a miserable season for Southampton, who have accumulated just 12 points at the time of writing. Fernandes, however, has been one of the precious few positives following his reported £15 million arrival from Portuguese outfit Sporting CP last summer.

The technically-gifted midfielder has recorded two goals and three assists from 34 Premier League appearances, with his creative forward passing and all-roundness earmarking him as a talent with a higher ceiling than the Championship next season.

As per a recent report by The Telegraph, Nuno Espírito Santo's Nottingham Forest are considering a move for Fernandes, who is said to fit the club's profile with his age and potential, in the event that star midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White departs the City Ground this summer.

Southampton will likely be in line to collect a profit on Fernandes if they decide to cash in, but just how much is the 20-year-old currently earning at St Mary's?

As per Capology, a site which provides estimated information on player salaries, Fernandes is currently collecting a weekly wage of £20,000.

On an annual basis, this equates to £1,040,000 with Fernandes under contract until the summer of 2029.

Rather surprisingly, though, the Portuguese youth international is one of the lower earners in the Saints' squad. The likes of Ramsdale, Jan Bednarek and Joe Aribo are all on estimated weekly contracts in excess of £50,000, while 12 other players are believed to be earning more than Fernandes at this moment in time.

Fernandes could well feel he is deserving of a higher salary considering his promising performances in a historically-poor Southampton side.

However, he would surely receive a fairly-handsome pay rise by completing a move to the East Midlands, which may just add an extra degree of appeal.

Forest's annual estimated wage bill of £58,006,000 is only £8 million higher than Southampton's, but that is surely subject to a big increase due to the Reds' recent sealing of qualification for European competition next term and the Saints' relegation to the Championship.

They are a richer club than Southampton with lofty top-flight ambitions, and will be able to offer Fernandes a healthy increase.
