Despite winning at the Parc des Princes, Liverpool manager Arne Slot has praised Paris Saint-Germain’s intensity and called on his side to raise their game in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie at Anfield on Tuesday.
PSG dominated Liverpool in the first leg at the Parc des Princes. However, despite 27 shots on the night, including nine on target, they could not beat Alisson, who admitted to TNT Sports post-match that he had perhaps played the best match of his entire career.
Having kept his side level with a string of high-class saves, Liverpool snatched the win late on with Harvey Elliott tucking into the far corner in the 87th minute, just seconds after coming off the bench. Liverpool therefore return for the second leg at Anfield next week with a one-goal advantage to protect.
PSG manager Luis Enrique said that he believes the result was “unfair” and Slot, speaking on Saturday, praised Les Parisiens’ first-leg performance. “I think that PSG showed us the right example. They played Lille OSC with incredible intensity, 4-0 up at half-time and then they played against us and that intensity, I have not seen before in a game that we have played this season. When I look at the game against PSG, we have to go one step up in terms of intensity if we want to have any chance of reaching the next round,” said the Liverpool manager.
Slot’s side will be favourites to progress, however, PSG have been in a bullish mood since the defeat and are still confident in their chances of qualification.
