FC Barcelona have showcased this season that a good squad can go a long way in achieving key objectives. While there is still quite some time left before the campaign concludes, the players have been impactful so far. For Barcelona, this current squad is a rather reliable one.
However, there has been little consistency in terms of regulars throughout the season. Players have often shifted into and out of starting elevens, and others have been transferred to the club midway through the campaign. Fortunately for Barcelona, all those different pieces fit perfectly together.
One such piece that arrived during the season was Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. The veteran shot-stopper was enjoying his retirement prior to this season, but an untimely injury to Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and a call from Barcelona later he found himself back in professional action as an emergency signing for one season.
So far, particularly in this second half of the season, the Pole has been a consistent starter for Hansi Flick. Declared by the German coach as his number one goalkeeper despite Inaki Pena having Flick’s trust previously, Szczesny is yet to even face defeat while starting for the team.
Now, as highlighted by Fabrizio Romano, the player has even revealed that he is open to continuing at Barcelona beyond this season because of his experience so far:
“If you asked me at the start of the season, I’d say I’ll be leaving Barça in June. But I love the time I‘ve spent here.”
He elaborated further and explained how even his family is enjoying the city of Barcelona so far, and how the player himself is open to staying beyond this season:
“My family is happy, my son loves his school, my wife loves being here… I’m open to everything.”
This will undoubtedly come as great news for fans and the club, as it just goes on to show the kind of impact and impression that Barcelona can have on any player. After all, Szczesny is a veteran of the game and has played for many elite clubs during his career.
However, as for the actual renewal itself, it remains to be seen what the club decides. Ter Stegen’s return is still in the works, and Pena has clearly been underwhelmed with his lack of participation recently, so a lot of factors could have a prominent influence on what happens between Szczesny and Barcelona.
